Today’s Ready Steady GO! is dedicated to The King of Soul, Otis Redding. On stage he was untouchable and performed like his life depended on it, with raw emotion, heart and soul. He could make you laugh, cry and dance all at the same time. Otis was just beginning to enjoy his success when he tragically died on the 10th of December 1967 at 26 years of age. He died in a plane crash just days after recording his huge hit single, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” The song became the first posthumous number one single in US chart history when it was released in January 1968. Much more chart success was to follow but unfortunately Otis never got to see or experience it, but he did leave behind a huge catalogue of music for us all to enjoy. Needless to say I am incredibly passionate about his music and I plan to share as many gems as possible with you today on RSG. Expect to hear Otis originals, songs that he has covered and Otis songs covered by other musicians, you’re in for a treat. So join me today at 3pm on RTE 2XM for Ready Steady GO! your weekly fix of 60’s Beats & Grooves.
